The Air Car

Damage to the environment has caused quite a sense of panic. Technology has been working hard for years to find valid fossil fuel alternatives. Producing new cars is quite expensive but it is necessary if we are going to make a change. There are many different types of cars now under study to determine if they would be a realistic possibility. The air car is one of these vehicles. Is it really possible to run a car solely on air? Well some people seem to think so. If the air car is a genuine possibility it may be one of the greatest inventions ever made.

The air car was first created by a French man named Guy Negre. It worked by using compressed air. As the compressed air inside the engine expanded it would move the pistons and drive the car. Of course the very first air car still had many drawbacks. For example the temperature of the air often affected how well it worked. Efficiency and reliability is always a priority with any type of car. The air car certainly shows promise. However it is not currently quite ready to be available to the general public.

Since further study has been done on the air car science is also looking at creating a hybrid air car. It would be similar to the hybrids of today allowing drivers to use both gasoline as well as air as an alternative. Storage tanks are used to store the air needed. The air inside the tank is stored under quite high pressure often more than 4500 pounds of pressure. However the benefit of this is that the emissions given off when running the air car contain no damaging toxins at all. Like with any type of vehicle or alternative to fossil fuel there are both advantages and disadvantages to the air car.

One advantage of the air car that many consumers might find beneficial is that having compressed air can actually reduce the overall cost of the vehicle. This is because by running air there would be no need for a cooling system. Also the batteries in the air car take much longer to die and will last for quite a long time. Many people may also feel safer knowing that the air car does not have such toxins as battery acid. Of course the most obvious advantage is the fact that air does not possess any of the harmful emissions that petroleum fuel has when combusted.

Disadvantages of the air car may include the fact that refuelling has to be done at home and it can take up to 4 hours or more. This is not really all that convenient and many consumers may be turned off by this. There is also a limited range as to how far you can drive while running air. Tests have not yet passed a range of seven kilometres which is something that has to be improved. With some significant changes and improvements the air car just might be a solution for the future.
